Two/One/Two : Leila's Lament

Beverley Clark

There was a time:

I told you I loved you.

Too proudly alien in your heart,

you would not respond.

The place was wrong, you said,

and the time could never be right

for two so different as we.

You returned to your duties,

and I was alone.

There was a time:

I told you I loved you.

By things more alien made human,

you touched my face.

The place was green and soft,

and the time (what time?) unimportant

for two so different as we.

There was a time:

I tell you I still love you.

But you are alien once again

and cannot respond.

You were right; there is no place,

and cannot ever be a time

for two so different as we.

You have your duty, I memory.

We are both alone.
